Do you have Bunion Booty?

May 21, 2018

A Bunion Booty is a lazy butt.   A Bunion Booty has difficulty engaging and building the strength to climb stairs without stressing the knees.

A Bunion Booty has difficulty stabilizing the SI joint during walking or running, causing pain when moving.   And a Bunion Booty definitely likes to bunt its work to the hamstrings making them work harder than they need should be, and increasing the risk of hamstring strains.

"AS THE ONLY CONTACT POINT BETWEEN THE BODY AND THE GROUND THE HUMAN FOOT PLAYS A CRITICAL ROLE IN THE WAY THE BODY ANTICIPATES AND REACTS DURING EVERY CLOSED CHAIN MOVEMENT."

- DR EMILY SPLICHAL

Now in the case of flat feet, weak feet or feet that have spent years in tight shoes, the abductor helices muscle can weaken.   As the abductor hallucis muscle starts to weaken a bunion begins to form.

As the bunion progresses the tendon of the abductor hallucis starts to shift into a position that makes the foot even weaker.   It actually shifts from the side of the big toe to under the big toe!

Essentially the bigger the bunion, the more the abductor hallucis tendon shifts and the weaker the foot.   The weaker the foot, the weaker the glutes.

There is a powerful interconnection between the deep foot stabilizers (intrinsics) and the deep core stabilizers (pelvic floor, deep rotators etc. ).  In dynamic movement such as walking the only contact point between the body and the ground is our foot - therefore foot stability is crucial to proper transfer of impact forces. When it comes to quickly and efficiently transferring these impact forces during walking - the faster our feet and core can "talk" to each other the better our walk, the decreased risk of injury and the more efficient our gait (less energy).

"THE SKIN ON THE BOTTOM OF THE FOOT IS PACKED WITH SENSORY NERVES THAT ASSESS, INTERPRET AND ANTICIPATE THE IMPACT FORCES OF DYNAMIC MOVEMENT."

- DR EMILY SPLICHAL

Every exercise or injury rehab program - regardless of region of the body - will benefit from foot to core sequencing. Be it shoulder stability or s/p ACL surgery - all joints in the body require fast pre-activation of the deep core stabilizers.

Barefoot Strong will take you through the sequencing of short foot and drills creating to improve reactionary movements in the body. The class is recommended a minimum 4 classes to see full benefits, and will improve outcomes in any loaded movement training outside of the studio.

We currently have 2 x CLASSES A WEEK
Tuesday 615pm
Saturday 630am

This class will improve bunion formation, reduce over time the pain and swelling and can assist in the repositioning of the big toe.  Here just one example of feedback from a regular class go-er.

"THE CLASS HAS HELPED ME WITH MY SQUATS, MY QUADS USED TO QUIVER AFTER A NUMBER OF REPS, NOW I CAN EASILY COMPLETE ALL SETS"

- HANNAH MANN, PHARMACIST
